Rangers Europa League teams, dates & all you need to know

A dominant 2-0 win over Malmo FF away from home at the end of September was followed by a comprehensive 4-1 loss to Olympique Lyonnais at Ibrox at the beginning of October.

Philippe Clement and his players face a further six Europa League encounters, as part of the competition’s new-look format.

This means that the competition’s traditional group stages are no longer in operation, with a new league phase taking their place. In practice, this means Rangers will play eight games against eight different teams – four of which will be held away from home, and four will be held at Ibrox.

Read on for our rundown of Rangers Europa League teams, dates & all you need to know about this year’s UEFA Europa League.

Rangers Europa League standings

This year’s UEFA Europa League matches kicked off on the evening of Wednesday, September 25, 2024.

Here’s how the league-phase table looks after two rounds of fixtures:

Europa League new format – how does it work and what is the league phase?

This year’s UEFA Europa League has a new format, marking the most significant change to the competition’s structure since the UEFA Cup was changed to the Europa League in 2008.

To this end, the familiar group stages are now more with a 36-team league phase instead taking its place. Here, each team plays eight different matches against eight different opponents – four at home, and four away from home.

The top eight sides in the league after eight games will qualify automatically for the round of 16, whereas the teams who finish in 9th to 24th place will compete in a two-legged knock-out play-off to secure their place in the tournament’s post-league phase knock-out round.

Teams that finish 25th or lower will be eliminated, with no access to the UEFA Europa Conference League as we’ve seen in previous years.

Here’s a deeper dive into the new rules and tournament format.
