Ultra-Gory Horror Sequel With 87% Rotten Tomatoes Score Becomes Streaming Hit

Terrifier 2 has become a major streaming hit as Terrifier 3 continues to dominate in theaters. Released in 2022, Art the Clown’s (David Howard Thornton) second major outing is again directed by Damien Leone and serves as a follow-up to his microbudget hit from 2016. Terrifier 2 reviews were generally positive from critics, and the sequel, which sports an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes, was widely praised for its gruesome moments of extreme gore.

New data from Reelgood now reveals that Terrifier 2 ranks as the sixth most popular movie on streaming in the U.S. for the week of October 10 – 16. Art the Clown actually dominates two spots on this top 10 list, with Terrifier (2016) serving as the fifth most popular movie on streaming and the tenth most popular title overall. While the sequel is available to watch for free on Freevee, the original is streaming on Prime Video.

Terrifier 2 beats titles like Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024), Hold Your Breath (2024), and Challengers (2024), but falls short of other movies like Caddo Lake (2024), Salem’s Lot (2024), and, in the number one spot, It’s What’s Inside (2024). Check out the full top 10 list below:

Catch Up On Art The Clown’s Past Kills

The Terrifier franchise is now undoubtedly one of the most notable horror franchise success stories in recent memory. The first film was made for only about $35,000 and became a surprise box office hit, grossing close to $500,000. Terrifier 2 was made for about $250,000 and grossed $15.7 million worldwide. Terrifier 3 reviews have been generally positive thus far, and that film, made for about $2 million, and has already grossed over $30.8 million worldwide, and this number continues to climb.

In addition to boasting an 87% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score for the sequel is 81%, suggesting that most who watch the film walk away satisfied.

Like its sequel and its predecessor, the 2022 film’s main selling point is its gore. In addition to this, however, the sequel also improves on the original by delving deeper into franchise lore, offering up more information about Art the Clown and exploring some supernatural elements in a fun way. Lauren LaVera’s Sienna also gets to truly shine.

Our Take On Terrifier 2’s Streaming Success

The Franchise Is A Major Horror Hit

The Terrifier franchise is most certainly not for everyone. The gore is extremely realistic and disturbing, and some viewers just won’t be into this. There’s no denying, however, that Art the Clown is now cemented as one of the horror genre’s most iconic villains.

It’s remarkable that an unrated, low-budget franchise continues to exhibit such reach, and the success speaks to the importance of word-of-mouth and viral marketing. While the best installment in the franchise is a matter of personal preference, Terrifier 2 is arguably the film that set the franchise down its current path, and it’s no surprise that it’s finding success on streaming two years after its theatrical release.
